Ex-Tottenham winger on the up
Transfermarkt has updated the market values in the Liga Portugal after the first weeks of the 2022/23 season and reassessed 92 players. After the convincing start under new head coach Roger Schmidt, the focus was particularly on players in the ranks of league leaders Benfica.
The Eagles won their first twelve games across all competitions and consequently recorded a large increase in squad value. The Portuguese record champions have added a total of €21.5 million and, with €260.3m, have regained first place from current title holders FC Porto (+€11.3m to €256.5m).
Forward Gonçalo Ramos, who seems to be making his final breakthrough this year after a decent last season, is moving up the ranks, among others. With four goals and two assists in four qualifying games, the 21-year-old played a big part in the team reaching the Champions League group stages. The Portugal U-21 international, who rose through the club’s own youth ranks, receives his third upgrade of the year following previous ones in March and May, jumping from €14m to €20m, the biggest increase in the league.

Market value update: Benfica defenders on the up – Florentino back on track
Benfica’s showpiece so far this season, however, has undoubtedly been their defence. Schmidt’s team has conceded just six goals in their first twelve games, keeping a clean sheet seven times. António Silva, an up-and-coming talent, has recently established himself in the back four. “The centre- back won the Youth League with the U-19s last season, played all ten games over the full distance and was one of the absolute key players,” Marcel de Almeida, Area Manager Portugal, said. “At the age of 18, Silva is already very calm and appears very confident in his actions. Fans and coaches are delighted with his performances so far.”
For Silva, who only received his starting value a year ago, it goes up from €300,000 to €4m. Other upgrades also include his partner at the back, Morato (+€5m to €15m), right-back Gilberto (+€1m to €6m) and defensive midfielder Florentino. The 23-year-old homegrown talent seems to be regaining his old strength after two rather unfortunate loan spells at Monaco and Getafe.
“In Schmidt, he finally has a coach who backs him again,” de Almeida said. “Florentino is currently an integral part of the starting eleven. If he can continue with these kinds of performances over a longer period, he could reach his old market value again.” In 2019, the right-footed former youth international was valued at €20m, now he goes up from €5m to €8m.
Ex-Tottenham forward Edwards among winners – Liverpool target Carmo up
Away from the team of the hour, the market values of two key performers are also on the rise at Porto and Sporting, both of whom were only signed this summer. For the Dragões, this applies to former Liverpool target David Carmo. The 23-year-old centre-back arrived at Porto from SC Braga for a fee of €20m plus €2.5m in potential add-ons and impressed with his strong ball-winning abilities and very good passing range. His new market value of €20m (+€5m) is now at the level of the initial transfer fee paid for his services.
At Sporting, Marcus Edwards recently attracted attention, especially in the Champions League. The Englishman arrived for €7.5m from Vitória Guimarães SC, who had signed the winger on a free transfer from Tottenham in 2019. “Edwards is currently Sporting’s best player and if he continues like this, English clubs will surely bring him back to the Premier League for big money,” de Almeida said. The 23-year-old rises from €15m to €20m and is one of the five most valuable English players abroad now.
