A statement by Juventus in the fight for the Champions League places in Serie A – or even in the race for the Scudetto? The Old Lady has announced the signing of Dusan Vlahovic, both the most valuable and most expensive winter transfer in January 2022. According to official information, the 21-year-old star striker of Fiorentina joins for €81.6 million (the deal includes €11.6 million in solidarity payments), plus €10 million in bonuses. Vlahovic has signed a contract valid until 2026, which is supposed to earn him €7 million net per season.
Thus, Vlahovic, with a plus of €54 million to €70 million the world’s biggest market value winner of the calendar year 2021, replaces Barça’s €55 million signing Ferran Torres and also makes the top 3 of the eternal winter transfer ranking. Only Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk were more expensive than the Serbia international in January 2018, at €135 million and €84.65 million respectively. Vlahovic puts himself ahead of Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal, among others, who had cost €64 million and €63.75 million respectively. Only Coutinho and Christian Eriksen (to Inter in January 2020), were more valuable at the point of their mid-season transfers – at €90 million each.

The transfer of Vlahovic, Serie A’s top scorer with 17 goals on par with Lazio veteran Ciro Immobile, could also trigger a chain reaction: Fiorentina will most likely sign Arthur Cabral for €16 million as a direct replacement from FC Basel. In return, the loan of Álvaro Morata to Juve could end prematurely. The Spaniard has been courted by FC Barcelona for weeks, but the Italian record titleholders had so far put a stop to the transfer.
“We have to understand what he and his agents want. Of course, we are also open to an extension, but we have offers to sell him at a high price. I say that because a club that earns €75 million a year and has such a valuable asset can’t afford to lose it for free,” Fiorenttina sporting director Daniele Pradè said of Vlahovic most recently. The striker, signed from Partizan Belgrade for just €1.95 million in 2018, had rejected an extension in the fall despite a record offer in terms of salary – his contract was valid until 2023.

For Juventus, who are fighting for a place in the Champions League this season instead of the title but have been in good form recently, the main issue is financing the deal – especially if Fiorentina insist on receiving the transfer fee immediately and in one instalment. Jatin Dietl, Transfermarkt Area Manager IT, says: “It is quite possible that other top-class players will have to make room for Vlahovic. A move of Morata to FC Barcelona should become much more likely again, and the question of Paulo Dybala’s future will also arise. Juventus have recently put negotiations to extend the expiring contract on hold due to the high salary demands. Inter Milan are interested.”

Fittingly, it could be Vlahovic’s goals that put Chiesa’s €40 million purchase obligation into effect. This will be achieved, among other things, by Juventus finishing in the top four. Due to his cruciate ligament rupture, the Euro winner will no longer reach the conditions attached to performance data. However, due to his importance at Juventus, it can be assumed that Chiesa will be signed on a permanent basis anyway.
