The Talent Calendar

At the 2022 World Cup, Belgium’s “Golden Generation” finished with a whimper, when the Red Devils were knocked out of the tournament in the group stages by an uneventful draw against Croatia. Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne all exited the stage, fully aware that their time as Belgium’s hopes and dreams had now come and past. But all is not lost for the small, European nation and several talents are likely to emerge from the shadows of these players. Among them is Julien Duranville, who ranks among the greatest hopes of his generation.

Duranville has been an exciting prospect in Belgian football since 2013, when Anderlecht swooped in for the young winger when he was still in elementary school. And the prospect has become such a well-regarded figure in the club’s youth academy that he’s since won himself an intruiging nickname. About a year ago, the club posted a video in which managing director Peter Verbeke referred to the youngster as a “flash”, due to his remarkable speed and explosive acceleration. Duranville would later emphasize the point in his professional debut in May of this year, in a play-off against Club Brugge. The forward was just 16 years and 17 days old when he came on in the 83rd minute, making him one of the youngster capped players in the club’s history. Despite only featuring for little more than seven minutes that day, the club still managed to pull together a two-minute clip of his skills on the ball that day.

The Belgian prospect has since been called up to the first team squad this season and in September celebrated his first goal for Anderlecht. Coming on as a substitute in the 65th minute against Oud-Heverlee Leuven, Duranville struck an excellent shot from long range into the back of the net. In the process he secured another spot in the club’s history books, becoming Anderlecht’s youngest goalscorer of all time. Such performances have also meant that in the most recent Belgium market value update, Duranville’s value jumped up to €5 million, making him one of the World‘s most valuable talents born in 2006.

To little surprise, the Anderlecht forward has already begun to garner interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. According to Belgian journalsit Sacha Taviolieri, Bayern Munich were reportedly interested in the striker last summer and made an offer of €15m for the talent. Spanish media also report that Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on Duranville too. In any case, with a contract that is set to run until 2024, there’s little doubt that the young forward would demand a large fee.
