Douglas Costa has left Grêmio early following their relegation to Brazil’s Série B but, as expected, will not return to parent club Juventus FC. The 31-year-old winger, who is still on loan to the Brazilians from the Bianconeri until summer, is joining Los Angeles Galaxy. The MLS club officially confirmed the signing of the former Bayern professional on Thursday.

Costa initially joins Los Angeles on loan within Gremio’s loan until the end of the season and will then be released on loan from Juventus to LA Galaxy in the summer. There he will receive a contract until December 31, 2023. The offensive player will take the last available spot as Designated Player. So far, only two of those, Kévin Cabral (22) and Chicharito (33), are under contract with Galaxy.

“Douglas is a world-class player and a proven champion at the highest level. His capacity to create and finish will add yet another level to our attack,” said LA Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney. “We are excited to integrate him into the team as we push toward the start of the season.”

“Douglas is an exceptional talent who has played at some of the biggest clubs in the world,” said LA Galaxy technical director Jovan Kirovski. “He is a big addition to our team, and we believe he will be a difference-maker in MLS.”

For Costa, Los Angeles is his fifth stop as a professional, having played for Shakhtar Donetsk in addition to youth club Grêmio, FC Bayern and Juventus. The left-footer reached his career peak in the 2017/18 season in Turin, when he contributed 19 goals in 47 games and subsequently received his highest market value of €55 million.
