After strike against Panama
The Canada men’s national team have opened their Concacaf Nations League campaign with a comfortable win 4-0 win over Curaçao in front of 17,216 spectators at BC Place. Alphonso Davies (27′ & 71′), Steven Vitoría (42′), and Lucas Cavallini (85′) were the scorers.
Controversy overshadowed this game, however. Canada’s players boycotted the friendly against Panama on Sunday, which was also supposed to take place at BC Place in Vancouver. That game was already the second to be canceled as Canada Soccer previously called off a friendly against Iran. That friendly against Iran was close to being sold out but with fans still waiting for their tickets to be refunded and a second game canceled, the game against Curaçao was nowhere near a sellout.
On the pitch that seemed to matter little to the boys in red. Canada were dominant from the start and Davies and Tajon Buchanan, in particular, stood out. The former would give Canada the lead after being brought down inside the box. In his first game back since being sold to Bayern Munich, Davies welcomed the opportunity to score in his homecoming game and easily converted from the spot to give Canada the lead. It would be the first of two goals for the Bayern left-back. But first defender Steven Vitória would add a second just before halftime.

Curaçao were more aggressive in the attack to open the second half. That, in turn, gave Canada space to counter, space the boys coached by John Herdman would use to great effect. Because in the 71st minute, Davies would tap home his second of the night after a wonderful cross by Richie Laryea.The job was done for the Bayern star, Herdman taking the winger off shortly after. But Canada would add another this time Whitecaps striker Cavallini got to score in front of his hometown fans.
