D.C. United head coach Wayne Rooney has found his new superstar. On Friday, the club announced that they have signed Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace. The Belgian national team player has signed a contract until 2024 with a club option for 2025. According to the Washington Post, Benteke becomes the highest-paid player in club history, exceeding the $3.5 million a season Rooney earned at the club as a player.
“Christian is a top player who has played at the highest level for a long time,” Rooney said in a club statement. “His experience and ability to score goals and help the team will be invaluable. It’s exciting for the team and myself to get him in and playing. He will make a huge difference.”
Benteke will add incredible experience to the Major League Soccer side. The 31-year-old striker has scored 86 goals and 23 assists in 280 Premier League games. Born in Kinshasha, Zaire, Benteke has featured in 45 games for Belgium and scored 18 goals. With a market value of $6.6 million, Benteke becomes the most valuable player on the D.C. United squad.
