Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire have signed US men’s national team winger Chris Mueller on a free transfer from Scottish club Hibernian FC. Mueller has signed a contract through 2025 with a club option for one additional season.
The Fire sent $500,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to his former MLS club Orlando City to acquire the rights. The Lions will also an additional $150,000 in performance-based GAM, a certain percentage of any future transfer fee, the Fire’s natural first-round selection in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, and the MLS discovery rights to an unnamed player.
“We’re very pleased to welcome Chris back to his hometown,” Chicago Fire sporting director Georg Heitz said in a club statement. “Chris is a player who we are very familiar with and his addition, along with the recent arrival of Jairo Torres, will immediately provide more quality and attacking options to the squad.” Mueller originally joined Hibernian in January and scored one goal in 15 appearances for the Scottish club.
