Update ahead of the World Cup

Transfermarkt has updated the market values in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A immediately after the end of the season. Midfielder Danilo, who was directly involved in three goals in 34 league games for champions Palmeiras and will not be traveling to the World Cup in Qatar with the Seleção coached by Tite, remains the league’s most valuable player with an unchanged value of €25 million. While his teammate Endrick, who is being courted by Real Madrid and Chelsea among others, moves into the top three of the ranking with an increase of €5m, Flamengo centre-forward Pedro records the biggest market value plus with an increase of €8m.

The 25-year-old striker, just like Endrick, is now valued at €20m. With 14 goals in 24 league games, the two-time international earned a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad last week and was the top scorer in this year’s edition of the Copa Libertadores (12 goals in 13 games). The Rio de Janeiro side won the prestigious competition with a 1-0 win over league rivals CA Paranaense in the final in October.

The latest €5m upgrade for 16-year-old youngster Endrick is due to his convincing debut in the Brazilian top flight: In seven games since the beginning of October, the left-footed player, who is regarded as Brazil’s greatest young talent in years, has scored four goals. Endrick, whose contract runs until 2025, was handed his first-ever market value in the summer, when he was rated at €15m, one of the highest starting values in Transfermarkt history.

Market values: Barbosa remains second most valuable player in Brazil despite drop

Former Benfica and Inter Milan forward Gabriel Barbosa, meanwhile, saw his market value drop by €2m as a result of the update. The 26-year-old Flamengo star, who has not been called up to the national team by Tite since February, was not quite able to match his numbers from the previous year, but remains the second most valuable player in the league behind Danilo at €22m.

Among the biggest market value losers are Atlético Mineiro’s Shakhtar Donetsk loanee Pedrinho, who played only seven games last season due to injury and has been sidelined with a torn thigh muscle since September (-€5m to €12m), and Botafogo midfielder Patrick de Paula, who has fallen short of expectations since he joined from Palmeiras and now drops from €11m to €7m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
