11 players from 8 clubs impacted
Several Brazilian players are unlikely to feature for their English clubs in the upcoming Premier League matchday. The reason for this is a FIFA rule that has been triggered by the Brazilian football federation. Players, who have failed to report for their national team can be banned from any games for five days if their clubs failed to allow them to travel to their national team. The players impacted are Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Fabinho (all Liverpool), Gabriel Jesus and Ederson (both Manchester City), Fred (Manchester United), Raphinha (Leeds United), and Thiago Silva (Chelsea). At first, it was unclear whether the clubs would protest the measure. Everton‘s Richarlison is not impacted.
Premier League clubs announced at the end of August to not allow players to travel to their national teams if they played World Cup qualifiers in countries that were on the United Kingdom COVID-19 red list. Players traveling to those countries would have had to spend ten days in quarantine. The decision was heavily criticized by national football federations.

Brazil has now opted to trigger a FIFA rule that would lead to players being banned. Chelsea’s Silva and Man United’s Fred will also miss out on the start of the Champions League, which will kick off next week. Everton’s Richarlison is exempt because the Toffees allowed him to take part in the Olympic Games.
Banned in England: Mexicans, Paraguayans, and Chileans also impacted
Brazilians are not the only ones banned. Mexican international Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Paraguay‘s Miguel Almiron (Newcastle United), and Chilean international Francisco Sierralta (Watford) are also unlikely to play on the weekend because their national federations have triggered the FIFA rule.
