While Arsenal were first in transfer fees paid, Manchester City were just third with €134.5 million spent for Jack Grealish and Co. The Citizens were, however, first when it came to agent fees paid. Manchester City had the most expensive transfer this season and renewed the contracts of João Cancelo, Ederson, Rúben Dias, and Kevin de Bruyne. Just one year ago, manager Pep Guardiola criticized Borussia Dortmund for signing Jadon Sancho from his club’s academy. “They are paying a lot of money to agents to get those unbelievable quality players.”

Man City not only paid more than any other Premier League club in agent fees but also more than Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur (€16.5m) together. In comparison, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, who were among the biggest spenders in terms of transfer fees in 2021/22, paid very little in agent fees. Last in the Premier League with €4.1 million paid in agent fees is Brentford—just a tenth of what Man City spent. Altogether agents received €322 million from agents—€400,000 more than last year.
