The World Cup is the greatest stage on the planet, and 53 players were able to use the platform to increase their market values. Eight Premier League players, two players in the Championship, and three players in the Scottish Premiership saw their market value increase. There is also a new, most valuable player at the very top worldwide.

Erling Haaland was the most valuable player on the planet from November 3 to December 23. The Norwegian took the place from Kylian Mbappé, ending the reign of the French superstar at the very top of the ranking. But Mbappé has now struck back, seeing his market value increase from €160 million to €180m after winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup, guiding his team all the way to the final, where he was the outstanding player despite France ultimately falling to Argentina.

7 Argentines upgraded – Álvarez now as valuable as Messi

“The World Cup is a display window for players with the attention of the entire World on it,” Transfermarkt head of international Christian Schwarz said. “We only paid attention to players, who showed significant improvements and/or managed to receive international focus that will ultimately lead to an increased interest on the transfer market—as a result, this World Cup market value update will only include upgrades.”

World Cup winners Argentina has seven market value winners—most prominently Enzo Fernández. The Benfica star saw his market value increase from €35m to €55m, which makes him the biggest market value winner in 2022, seeing his value increase by 1000%. Signed for just €12m from River Plate last summer, the decision-makers in Portugal’s capital can already plan for a significant transfer profit as the 21-year-old is likely to move on next summer. Maybe earlier if a top club decides to activate his €120m release clause in January.

Julián Álvarez also transferred from River Plate to Europe, where he is now the backup to Haaland at Manchester City. Whether that will change now that he is a World Cup is doubtful. Perhaps the best replacement striker in the World, his market value increased from €32m to €50m, the same as his idol Lionel Messi—he is the most valuable over 34 player on the planet.

RB Leipzig‘s Gvardiol now most valuable center-back on the planet

The finalists aside, players that stood out were RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol (new market value €75m), PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo (€60m), and Sofyan Amrabat (€25m) from Fiorentina. All three saw their market value increase by €15m.

Most valuable center-backs
Gvardiol now 1st
Overview
Gvardiol, who was signed by Leipzig for just €18.8m from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2021 was the central player in Croatia’s defense and stood out in one-v-one situations and by making spectacular clearances. Clubs from the Premier League were already interested ahead of the World Cup, and his performances have only increased the attention. With a market value of €75m, Gvardiol, together with Man City’s Rúben Dias, is now the most valuable center-back on the planet. While Gvardiol has a €110m exit clause for the summer of 2024, sources have told Transfermarkt that a transfer this winter and next summer is extremely unlikely. “All emails have gone straight to the spam folder,“ Leipzig’s sporting director Max Eberl recently said to the Austrian TV station ServusTV. “Gvardiol, offer, straight to spam. Hence, I have not received anything.”

PSV boss Marcel Brands and Fiorentina’s sporting director Daniele Pradè will probably be more open to transfer discussions. Both Gakpo and defensive midfielder Amrabat are heavily linked to winter moves. Gakpo is heavily linked to Man United, and Amrabat is a candidate at Liverpool, where fans of the Reds are dreaming of a midfield of him together with England’s Jude Bellingham. The Dortmund star underlined his status as the biggest midfield talent on the planet at the World Cup, increasing his market value by another €10m to €110m.

Saka now part of €100m club – Two Celtic stars on the up

Bellingham is not the only English star with a significant increase. Bukayo Saka from Premier League leaders Arsenal played a fantastic tournament, and the winger is now part of an exclusive club. The 21-year-old saw his market value grow from €90m to €100m and is now just one of nine players with a market value of €100m or more.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, two Celtic players also used the World Cup to increase their respective market values. Croatian right-back Josip Juranovic was already heavily linked with a move to a top 5 league ahead of the World Cup. His performances at the tournament, where Juranovic helped Croatia finish third, will have only increased the demand, and his market value grew from €6.5m to €9m. Celtic’s Japanese winger Daizen Maeda also made a jump seeing his market value grow to €5m (+€1m).

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
