Scott Boras is keeping fans on their toes as they await Cody Bellinger’s free agency decision.
Boras, one of the MLB’s most notable agents, seemingly revealed some of Bellinger’s possible landing spots with a cryptic answer on Tuesday.
“It’s not for me to Judge, but great players see Red if they have a big bat Yanked out of their lineup,” Boras said, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “I haven’t Met a team that Dodges a five-tool player. To Phil the center field need is a Giant step towards the playoffs. North and south outfielders that fly with power, they’re rare Birds. In the offseason, there’s a lot of startup to organizations, and for that reason, there’s a lot of Angel investors that are looking for very versatile outfielders. So other than that, Belli doesn’t have much interest.”
While it’s hard to decipher exactly what teams Boras was referencing, it appears the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels are in the mix. His birds comment is a bit open-ended, as he could be referencing the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles or St. Louis Cardinals.
Boras was asked specifically about whether Bellinger would be open to returning to the Dodgers.
“He loved his time as a Dodger, there’s no doubt about it,” Boras said. “It was always good. He won a world championship there, he won an MVP there, Rookie of the Year. When you do that, I think you’re gonna like where you’re playing.”
He also suggested that if the Dodgers are interested in Bellinger, they’ll need to be willing to make a strong offer to get him to Los Angeles.
“In today’s world everyone views the Dodgers as a Goliath, and when Goliath wants something, we’ll see,” Boras said. “They’re people who have really shown a great amount of acuity to put together winning teams, and I don’t expect anything different from them going forward.”
But the Dodgers might not be interested in spending big this offseason. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday that the club will “dip their toes in the water” for Bellinger and other top free agents, but “would prefer” less expensive talent.
The team Bellinger spent the 2025 campaign with reportedly is interested in getting another season with him, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported last month that New York “would like a return engagement with Bellinger.”
In the same report, Passan noted that the Blue Jays view Bellinger “as a perfectly good alternative” to Kyle Tucker, who is widely considered the top free agent on the market.
Boras and company are seemingly trying to bolster Bellinger’s value, as Nightengale reported that his camp “is reminding everyone who’ll listen that he’s just 1 and a half years older than” Tucker.
Bellinger, the 2019 NL MVP, is coming off a strong season with the Yankees in which he hit .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI. According to Spotrac, he has a market value of $30.4 million per year.
