New York Mets relief pitcher Devin Williams seemingly had a comment for fans of his 2025 team, the New York Yankees, via an Instagram story on Wednesday.
Williams landed in the Bronx after the Milwaukee Brewers traded him to the Yankees for starting pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Caleb Durbin and cash considerations last December.
He went 4-6 with a 4.79 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18 saves over 67 games. Williams lost his closer role on two occasions, first to Luke Weaver and later to David Bednar.
Williams signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Mets on Monday.
Williams did enjoy sustained stretches of success with the Yankees at times last year. For example, he had 13 straight scoreless appearances to close his run in town (including playoffs).
The problem was that Williams sometimes had very bad outings, including four occasions where he allowed three or four earned runs on less than an inning pitched.
The Mets are betting that Williams returns to his pre-2025 form, where he starred with the Brewers.
From 2020-2024, Williams went 27-10 with a 1.70 ERA (0.98 WHIP) and 14.6 K/9 rate. He won the National League’s Rookie of the Year award in 2020 and made the NL All-Star team in 2022 and 2023.
Ultimately, last season isn’t necessarily an indictment on Williams as a pitcher. If he showcases his potential in Queens, then the Mets could be getting a steal.
For now, Williams seemingly has something to say for Yankees fans, but that will be water under the bridge soon enough as he and others are tasked with righting the ship for the Mets, who are looking to move past a second-half collapse that left team at 83-79, a game outside the NL Wild Card spot. Adding Williams to shore up the bullpen can certainly help.
