Penn State head coach James Franklin announced that quarterback Drew Allar will be out for the rest of the 2025 season due to an apparent leg injury he suffered in the team’s 22-21 loss to Northwestern on Saturday.

Allar suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of the loss after he was tackled while scrambling in an attempt to pick up a first down. He was eventually carted to the locker room.

Penn State trailed by one point at the time of his injury, failing to convert on fourth down immediately after he left the contest before Northwestern ran out the clock to seal the final result on its next possession.

Allar was 13-of-20 for 137 yards and one interception prior to his exit. He also rushed for 25 yards and a touchdown on six attempts.

Allar was in the midst of his fourth year under center for Penn State, choosing to forgo the 2025 NFL draft and return to the school on Jan. 13.

Heading into Saturday’s action, Allar completed 63.1 percent of his throws for 7,265 yards and 61 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions across 44 games during his Nittany Lions career.

As Penn State attempts to improve upon its 3-3 record without its starting signal-caller, Allar will look towards the 2026 NFL draft.

While his injury could complicate his pre-draft process, he was still projected to be off the board with the No. 19 overall pick in the latest mock draft from Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department.

In the meantime, the Nittany Lions will turn towards Ethan Grunkemeyer at quarterback.
