
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami advanced to the 2025 MLS Cup final with a 5-1 victory over New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final on Saturday at Chase Stadium.
Messi, who entered the match with 12 goal contributions in his first four postseason appearances, recorded one assist and two successful crosses in the win.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also recorded an accurate pass percentage of 89.2 percent.
Fans were impressed with Miami’s accomplishment.
Tadeo Allende continued his strong postseason run, as he was responsible for Miami’s first goal of the match in the 14th minute.
Allende struck again less than 10 minutes later, finding the back of the net on a header following a long pass from Jordi Alba to double Miami’s lead.
The 26-year-old wasn’t finished, as he recorded a hat trick by putting the finishing touches on the victory.
Miami’s path towards the win wasn’t completely smooth, as New York cut the deficit to 2-1 entering halftime following a goal from Justin Haak.
Messi helped the Herons gain some more breathing room with his lone assist of the night, finding Mateo Silvetti for a goal in the 67th minute.
Alba was exceptional at connecting with his teammates throughout the match, setting up Telasco Segovia in the 83rd minute with a heel pass.
Inter Miami’s offense was strong throughout the battle, racking up six shots on goal compared to just three for New York.
The Herons also held 51.23 percent of possession.
Miami will now await either San Diego FC or Vancouver in the MLS Cup final, which is set to take place on Dec. 6.
