Wolves could be without one of their star players when Manchester United travel to Molineux on Boxing Day.
It was a good weekend for Manchester United in the Premier League. The Reds beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, while things got worse for Boxing Day opponents Wolves after suffering a 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation contenders Ipswich Town.
Wolves’ defeat ended in controversy following a brawl on the pitch at full-time. It involves Manchester United target Matheus Cunha, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks.
Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in attendance at Molineux to keep an eye on former United coach and colleague Kieran McKenna. It remains to be seen if the Norwegian coach will be considered for the job ahead of a potential return to the Premier League.
Wolves will now turn their attention towards finding a replacement for Gary O’Neil and getting better results on the pitch. One way to achieve that is by ensuring their star players are available for selection.
Matheus Cunha could miss Manchester United clash
Matheus Cunha has been instrumental for Wolves this season.
The 25-year-old has scored eight goals in 16 Premier League games but is at risk of missing their upcoming fixture against United.
Cunha has been charged by the Football Association following a heated altercation with an Ipswich staff member at the end of their 2-1 defeat.
Tensions were high at Molineux when the Brazilian struck a member of the Ipswich coaching team and removed glasses from another staff member’s face.
The FA has confirmed that Cunha has been charged with misconduct and has until Thursday to issue a response. It remains unclear whether the forward will receive a suspension as a result.
A suspension is the last thing Wolves need for one of their star players as they reach survival mode in the Premier League.
Cunha would miss United transfer audition
There has been speculation over Cunha’s future amid Wolves’ struggles. A player of that calibre is unlikely to stick around if they end up in the Championship.
Relegation could lead to a fire sale at Wolves, which could appeal to clubs like United in more ways than one.
Ruben Amorim has been tasked with turning things around with a side that struggled to score goals under Erik ten Hag. It remains to be seen if he will turn to Cunha in the winter transfer window.
With eight goals this season, Wolves will do their utmost to fight off interest for Cunha in January. They would be in a weaker position now if it wasn’t for his goals.
Cunha may be settled at Wolves, but the former Atletico Madrid striker will aim to one day play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. That is why he’d be silly not to see a trip to Old Trafford as an audition.
