Many people are starting to rethink their summer predictions about Chelsea as we draw closer to the halfway point of the season.
It’s a surprise to most to see Chelsea up towards the top end of the Premier League table going into the festive schedule.
The Blues made it five consecutive league victories by beating Brentford at home on Sunday. However, Enzo Maresca insists Chelsea still aren’t title challegners.
Next, they travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday after Thursday’s Conference League match at home to Shamrock Rovers.
Alan Shearer prediction on Chelsea
Alan Shearer admits he’s been super impressed by Chelsea so far this season, but he still doesn’t think they’ll be able to win the division title.
When discussing Chelsea on The Rest Is Football, Shearer said: “In the position they’re in, it’s very difficult to turn around and say a definite no, they can’t [win the league]. I still think they’ll have a little blip. I don’t expect them to win it, no, but they’re having an unbelievable season.”
Similarly, Jamie Carragher doesn’t think Chelsea will win the Premier League, but he definitely considers them title contenders. Elsewhere, Steve Nicol insists Chelsea are in the title race right now.
Chelsea record vs their rivals
Interestingly, Chelsea haven’t won in any of their four league games this season so far against the sides also in the top five of the division table.
The Blues lost to both Liverpool (1st) and Manchester City (5th). On top of that, they could only manage draws with Arsenal (3rd) and Nottingham Forest (4th).
When it comes around to the return fixtures, Maresca’s side will surely need to do better to get in the mix for the league crown. In terms of their chances of finishing in the top four, it’s suddenly starting to look extremely rosy as they try to get back into the Champions League.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank named Chelsea the Premier League’s form side, but how long can this young group keep up the momentum for?
