Man United transfer news: Cristiano Ronaldo to leave immediately by mutual agreement

By

After TalkTV Interview

Last week Cristiano Ronaldo gave a controversial interview with Piers Morgan. Now Manchester United have drawn their own conclusions. On Tuesday evening, the club announced that the 37-year-old “is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.” Ronaldo accused Erik ten Hag of treason and heavily criticized the Glazer family, who own the club.

Following the release of the interview, Man Utd announced on Monday that they would first take into consideration all the facts before making a decision. “After talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract,” Cristiano Ronaldo said in a statement. “I love Manchester United, and I love the fans; that will never ever change. It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Man Utd all the best.”

Ronaldo will now leave Man United for a second time. The striker played for the Red Devils between 2003 and 2009 before joining Real Madrid for €94 million. The 37-year-old then returned to the club in the summer of 2021 and overall has scored 145 goals and 64 assists in 346 games for Man United.

Ronaldo leaves Man United – Where next for the Portuguese superstar?

Ronaldo will now be a free agent, and he has already been linked with a move to various clubs, including Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF. But it remains to be seen if the forward can find a viable club to join after the World Cup.

Consistent reports have linked the player with a return to Portugal and his boyhood club, Sporting, but the club have routinely dimissed any idea of them being able to afford to sign their most famous export to European football. “It was never even a topic nor was it on the table,” said Sporting president Frederico Varandas in an interview with RTP3 earlier this month. “There was never a conversation with me, with (sporting director) Hugo Viana or (manager) Ruben Amorim. This topicnever existed. Although I know it sells very well in the press.”

Similarly, rumours linking Ronaldo to other potential clubs have also tended to hit a dead end. Bayern Munich were quite vocal about considering a move for the player, before dismissing it entirely earlier in the year when Bayern director Oliver Kahn said: “As much as I appreciate Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the greatest players, a move would not fit into our philosophy.” And most recently reports in Spain have suggested that Madrid would be unlikely to make a move for the player in January.
