Leeds have to pay Jean-Kévin Augustin fee – Among most expensive signings in club history

Cost more than Raphinha

After a legal dispute lasting more than two years, Leeds have been forced to pay Bundesliga club RB Leipzig the full fee agreed for the transfer of Jean-Kévin Augustin. The decision was announced by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday, as it confirmed in a statement. As a result, the German club are entitled to a transfer fee of almost €21 million. In a first instalment, Leeds have to pay just over €6.7m to Leipzig. The total amount makes the Frenchman the sixth most expensive signing in club history, ranking Augustin ahead of Raphinha, who left Leeds for FC Barcelona for a record fee of €58m this summer, among others.

Augustin had joined the then Championship side on loan in January 2020 with an obligation to buy in the event of the club reaching promotion. The striker failed to convince at Elland Road and Leeds refused to pay, citing the fact that promotion had not yet been determined on June 30 due to the COVID-19 pause to the campaign. However, CAS rejected the appeal and held that the purchase obligation had been triggered at the end of the 2019/20 season, even though it had concluded later than expected.

Leeds immediately issued a statement saying they were disappointed by the ruling and would “now review carefully all of its legal options with a view to an immediate appeal”. From a career high of €25m in 2018, Augustin’s market value dropped by 94% within three years until 2021. He only made three appearances for Leeds, failing to score. The PSG youth product has since represented Nantes and Basel.
