Complete update Liga Profesional

With the season concluded, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 765 players in Argentina’s Liga Profesional. The biggest winner of the update is super talent Luca Langoni from freshly crowned champions Boca Juniors. The 19-year-old benefited from several injuries in the first team and made his debut in June. Langoni’s initial market value was €300,000, but just one month later, he received a 1900% upgrade to €6m.

“Langoni wasn’t even a starter for Boca’s junior team, and all of a sudden had to start for the first team in the middle of a title challenge,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Argentina Scott Christensen said. “There he surprised everyone. His six goals secured 11 points and the 29th title.” Lagoni now jumps into the top 20 of the most valuable players in the league.

Altogether the squad value of the league champions increases by €6m to €78.6m. As a result, Boca remain just behind their arch-rivals River Plate, who, after finishing third in the league standings, dropped by almost €2m to €90.5m but still remain in first with the highest squad value and in Nicolás de la Cruz (€13m) they have the most valuable player in the league.

New in the top 3—just behind de la Cruz and Boca’s Alan Varela (+€1.5m to €10m)—is another talent. Facundo Buonanotte from Rosario Central has been described by Christensen as one of the most promising players in the league. “Only 17, he already has plenty of charisma and was never faced by the pressure his team faced after poor performances and a terrible season in which they finished 20th in the league.” Thanks to an upgrade by €3m to €9m, the attacking midfielder with strong one-v-one abilities is now at the very top of the club’s internal market value ranking.

The only teammate close is Alejo Véliz. The 19-year-old forward is Rosario’s top goalscorer with eight goals and sees his market value increase by €2.5m to €4m. “Véliz is a strong, big and physical striker, who holds on to the ball very well,” Christensen said. “He scored in the derby against Newell’s Old Boys and has been confident ever since.”

Several River stars see their market value drop—worth mentioning are David Martínez (-€1.5m to €4.5m), Esequiel Barco (-€1m to €7m), Agustín Palavecino (-€1m to €5m) and Diego Godín. The former Atlético Madrid captain joined Vélez Sarsfield from the Brazilian Série A this summer. “Because of injuries he was unable to fulfill the high expectations placed in him,” Christensen said. “When he was on the pitch his experience was showing but because of his age the market value has to drop.” The 36-year-old saw his market value drop below €1m for the first time since 2007 going down by €300,000 to €700,000.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
