Replaces Gerrard
Aston Villa have found a replacement for recently sacked manager Steven Gerrard. On Monday, the club confirmed that they had reached an agreement with Villarreal manager Unai Emery. According to Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League club paid €6m to force Emery out of his Villarreal contract. Romano further reported that Emery will earn €7m a season at the Birmingham-based club.
The Spaniard will formally take over Villa when he has received his work permit, which is expected to take place by November 1. It will be Emery’s second stint in the Premier League. The 50-year-old managed Arsenal from July 2018 to November 2019 and averaged 1.85 points per game in 78 matches with the Gunners.
After leaving Arsenal, Emery took charge of LaLiga side Villarreal where he won the Europa League title in 2020/21. It was Emery’s fourth success in that competition as the Spaniard won the Europa League in three consecutive years—from 2014 to 2016—with Sevilla. Over the course of 130 matches, Emery had a points per game average of 1.78, and the Yellow Submarines are currently in seventh place in the LaLiga standings.

Aston Villa spent €70m this summer – Can Emery turn it around?
Aston Villa spent €70m under previous manager Gerrard in the summer transfer window but have struggled under the former Liverpool legend. The club did have a big rebound win on the weekend, demolishing Brentford 4-0 to jump to 15th place in the Premier League. Villa will face Newcastle United on October 29 and then Manchester United on November 6 in what will presumably be Emery’s first game in charge at his new club.
