Second most valuable free agent
A week after his contract with Chelsea was terminated, Ross Barkley has found a new club. The 28-year-old will move to the Côte d’Azur and play for OGC Nice in Ligue 1. With a market value of €12 million, Barkley, who was presented to the fans ahead of the 1-0 defeat against AS Monaco on Sunday, was the second most valuable free agent on the market.

The 33-time England international, who is now leaving his homeland to play abroad for the first time, had joined the Blues for €16.8 million from Everton in January 2018 and made a total of 100 appearances (12 goals) for Chelsea. Last season, the midfielder was loaned out to Aston Villa and did not play a major role under head coach Thomas Tuchel after his return to Stamford Bridge. According to English media reports, Chelsea are said to have paid Barkley a compensation to get him off the payroll. He has reportedly been earning around £200,000 (around €235,000) a week.
At Nice, where he is now coached by Lucien Favre, Barkley is the 13th new signing of the summer and joins former Premier League faces Aaron Ramsey, Nicolas Pépé and Kasper Schmeichel, among others. The French club sit 16th in Ligue 1 and have only won one of their six matches so far.
