Chelsea prospect exits
Bayer Leverkusen are set to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi on loan for the duration of the 2022/23 season. According to Sky Sports, the 21-year-old England international opted for a move to the Bundesliga club despite interest from as many as 20 clubs around European football. With a market value of €23 million, Hudson-Odoi makes the move to Germany with two years left on his contract at Chelsea.
Despite coming through the Chelsea youth academy as a young player with immense potential, which has seen the winger linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent years and a potential loan move to Borussia Dortmund as recently as this transfer window, Hudson-Odoi has ultimately struggled to nail down a starting role in the first team at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons.

Hudson-Odoi made his breakthrough in the 2018/19 season, which saw the young wide forward bag four goals and two assists in nine Europa League games, as well as a further assist in 10 league appearances under Maurizio Sarri. The winger then established himself as a starter under Frank Lampard in the 2019/20 season, picking up 22 Premier League appearances, as well as experience in the Champions League.

However, it was the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and his change in tactics in January 2021 which seemed to derail Hudson-Odoi’s progress at Chelsea. From being a genuine option on either wing, the young player then found himself being used as a wing-back in Tuchel’s system, where he has struggled to supplant either César Azpilicueta or Reece James. As such, Hudson-Odoi only managed 966 minutes of Premier League football last season.
That, ultimately, should change at Leverkusen. Although the Bundesliga side have a star winger in Moussa Diaby, the depth for either wide position is perhaps a little too light for a club with ambitions of finishing in the top four at the very least. As such, Hudson-Odoi should pick up plenty of game time in his preferred position in the final third, where he will hopefully be able to showcase the promise he once had in London.
