On the shortlist
Manchester United are targeting Atlético Madrid forward Matheus Cunha. ESPN reporter Julien Laurens was the first to break the story on Monday afternoon. According to the report, Man United have the 23-year-old Brazilian on their shortlist, and the forward is keen to join the Premier League club.
Atlético Madrid are in the driver’s seat, however. Cunha is currently under contract until 2026, and Atlético signed the striker just one year ago for €26 million from Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin. The forward, who can also play on the wing, has since increased his market value to €30 million. According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atlético Madrid will want at least €50 million for the striker.
It would be Cunha’s fourth transfer since 2018. The striker originally joined RB Leipzig from Sion for €15 million and was then moved on to Hertha just two years later for €18 million. The club kept the Brazilian for just two full seasons selling Cunha to Atlético in a deal worth €26 million. Altogether, Cunha has already generated €59 million in transfer fees throughout his career—only 25 Brazilian players have been more expensive throughout their careers. Only seven Brazilians have generated a higher transfer should United pay the rumored €50 million.

If a transfer materializes, Cunha would be with his third club in as many countries over the last three seasons. The striker scored six goals and six assists in 29 LaLiga games for Atlético last season. The Spanish giants signed the Brazilian national team player (seven games) after he scored 13 goals and 10 assists in 40 Bundesliga games for Hertha throughout the 2020/21 season. Adaptable to play many positions, Cunha could fill several roles for United across the front three and, most importantly, in the no.9 slot.
