Winger remaining at Camp Nou
France international Ousmane Dembélé is set to sign a new contract with Barcelona after deciding to stay put at the Spanish club, according to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 25-year-old forward will reportedly accept a reduction in basic salary and sign a deal that would keep him at the La Liga club until 2024.
Dembélé’s future at Barca has been a major issue at the club for at least the past 12 months now, with numerous managers and club presidents making an issue of the player’s refusal to sign a new contract, despite a number of attempts to offer him a new deal. This, perhaps, came to a fiery conclusion in February, when club president Joan Laporta slammed the player for opting to run out his contract rather than allow them to sell him for a fee in the January window. So what has changed in the past six months to turn Dembélé’s head back towards the Camp Nou and convince him that his future remains at Barcelona?

Xavi and a lack of offers from elsewhere – why Dembélé is staying at Barca
Perhaps the most obvious factor comes from the fact that the forward didn’t have too many offers on the table to entice him away from Barca. Since the start of the year, Dembélé’s has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, Newcastle United and even speculatively with a potential transfer to Bayern Munich. However, despite plenty of chatter from the rumour mill, no such offer ever seemed to materialise. As such, the forward has perhaps been left to accept Barca’s offer, due to nothing better being on the table.
However, there is one clear positive factor that may have convinced the player to stay: Xavi. The relatively inexperienced head coach enjoyed an impressive first season in charge of his former club and along the way Dembélé certainly seemed to thrive under his new manager, where he had previously struggled under the ones that came before. Last season, the France international picked up an impressive two goals and 13 assist in 32 appearances – or an average of a goal or assist every 129 minutes of football – and looked like his old self at times.
