Striker swaps Bern for Berlin
Union Berlin have confirmed the signing of Young Boys striker Jordan Siebatcheu as their second major signing of the summer window. The Bundesliga side recently sold former star striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Nottingham Forest for €20.5 million and in Siebatcheu, the US international now makes the move from Switzerland as a direct replacement.
“After two successful years in Bern, where I had the perfect environment as a young player to develop myself, the next step in my career is now ahead of me,’ said the 26-year-old striker, who bagged 42 goals and nine assists in 88 games for Young Boys. “I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga and I’m convinced that I’ve found the right club in Union. Their style of play suits me very well and I’m happy to go hunting for goals for the Irons in the unbelievable atmosphere at the Alte Försterei.”
Haaland, Coutinho & Co. – The most expensive summer transfers in 2022
Born in Washington, D.C, Siebatcheu began his career in France at Stade Reims, and spent a short spell on loan at LB Châteauroux before making a temporary move to Young Boys. However, after an impressive first season at the Swiss side, the American was then signed for €2.5m in 2021, which has now allowed the club to make a notable profit off the back of the striker’s impressive goal tally over the course of the past 12 months.
Siebatcheu is Union’s second major signing of the summer window, following the arrival of Jamie Leweling from Greuther Fürth for €4m. However, the club have also added no less than six additional players to Urs Fischer’s team as free transfers or loan signings. And the club couldn’t be more delighted with their business to date. “Jordan is a striker who will suit us well with his way of playing football and can play in different game systems,” said Union’s managing director professional football Oliver Ruhnert on the club website. “We’re looking forward to him, his goal threat and the fact that he has chosen Union.”
