Barça and Atético downgraded
Transfermarkt has given all LaLiga players a new market value, and the bottom line is that several of the biggest clubs have experienced a significant drop – even the kings of Europe have to accept a small minus. But also the biggest plus goes to a Real Madrid star, as well as an upgrade that has never been made before in 18 years of market values on Transfermarkt, while a downward trend manifests itself among the top goalkeepers.
In 2018, Real Madrid bought Vinicius Junior, who defends his top spot in LaLiga with a market value of €100 million, while in 2019, the capital club acquired the services of Rodrygo, who is now the biggest winner of the update with a jump from €40 million to €60 million – combined cost at the time: €90 million. With two goals against Man City, Rodrygo helped Los Blancos to reach the Champions League final, while Vinicius secured the title with his decisive goal.
The most valuable players in LaLiga
“Thanks to his outstanding performances in LaLiga and the Champions League at the end of the season, Rodrygo has recommended himself for a significant upgrade. Although often coming on as a substitute, the Brazilian has played a big part in the triumphs of the Madrilenians thanks to his goal contributions and mentality. His brace in the semi-final against Manchester City is unforgettable – a regular spot should be the next step in the upcoming season. Thanks to his above-average positional play, the winger can compensate for physical deficits, and his intelligence on the pitch is already at a high level,” says Tobias Blaseio, Area Manager ES.
Big plus at 34: Real Madrid’s Benzema provides market value novelty
The mentor of the two Brazilian talents is currently the best striker in the world: Karim Benzema. Aging like a fine wine, the 34-year-old is in the form of his life: 44 goals in 46 games – the Frenchman has never been better and this is also reflected in his market value, which is raised from €25 million to €30 million. There has never been such a big upgrade for a player of his age.
As paradoxical as it may sound, Thibaut Courtois, who secured Real the Champions League title and became Man of the Match, is devalued from €65 million to €60 million. However, this has nothing to do with his performances, as LaLiga expert Blaseio explains: “In the course of international market value coordination, TM sometimes makes strong devaluations in the top goalkeeper segment, as there is hardly any movement on the market and high transfer fees are a rarity. The Belgian therefore receives a minimal devaluation, but is now the most valuable goalkeeper in the world by a larger margin than before.”

When you talk about the top goalkeeper segment, you quickly end up with Atlético’s Jan Oblak and Barça’s Marc-André ter Stegen. For Oblak, who in his eighth season for Atleti arguably had his weakest campaign yet, it goes down from €60 million to €45 million. In his first seven years, he was never beaten more than 29 times in LaLiga – in 2021/22, he conceded 43 goals. Ter Stegen could not regularly perform at the highest level as well. As a result, the Germany international drops from €45 million to €30 million.
Also due to the high devaluations of their goalkeepers, the biggest market value losses can be found in the squads of Atlético (-53 to €626 million) and FC Barcelona (-52.5 to €608 million). The highest percentage drop of 12.3% goes to Sevilla (-50.6 to €361 million). For Real Madrid (-6.5 to €750 million), there is only a minimal downgrade in relation to the value of the squad.
Big market value losses for Barça’s de Jong and Atlético’s Llorente
A year ago, current Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong (Barça) and Marcos Llorente (Atlético) were among the five most valuable LaLiga players – today, de Jong just barely makes the top 10 and Llorente the top 25. “The Dutchman actually has everything on offer that the Barça DNA asks for: Playing intelligence and technical ability, actually a prime example of the Cruyff school of football. Nevertheless, it doesn’t quite seem to fit. De Jong, unfortunately, doesn’t look like he can take over a leadership role in the long run, so a sale seems attractive from Barcelona’s perspective. Whether de Jong will shape a successful era at the Catalans, there is a question mark behind that,” Blaseio says about the devaluation from €70 million to €60 million.
For Llorente, it even goes down from €60 million to €45 million. “Under Diego Simeone, the development of the player has stagnated and Llorente has suffered from his versatility. The midfielder has lacked any impact this season, so his goal contributions have deteriorated extremely. Two goals in this season after 25 in the previous one speak for themselves and are the main reason for the drop in market value. Simeone would do well to use him as attack-minded as possible again to bring his strengths back to life,” Blaseio says.
Away from the Champions League spots, one of Valencia’s big winners is 22-year-old Hugo Guillamón. The defensive all-rounder is making a jump from €10 million to €20 million – meaning he almost tripled his market value in a year.
“The young Spaniard has played a stable season in a struggling environment and has developed into a leader, making him a candidate for the Spanish national team once again. Despite his change of position from centre-back to defensive midfield, he has been able to establish himself and was supposed to have his contract extended a long time ago. However, due to various disagreements with the owner and the club, the renewal has not yet been finalised. Guillamón emerged from the club’s youth ranks and seems to want to stay, but if the unrest at the club does not disappear, this could change. There should be no shortage of potential buyers,” says Blaseio.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
