4th Bundesliga signing

Major League Soccer expansion side St. Louis City SC have finally made the Joakim Nilsson signing official. After already securing Roman Bürki (Dortmund), João Klauss (Hoffenheim), and Tomas Ostrak (1.FC Köln), the Swedish defender becomes the fourth player from the German Bundesliga signed by sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel. The 28-year-old center-back joins on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld and has signed a contract until 2026.

“We have managed to get another top player with tremendous quality and experience on our roster,” said Pfannenstiel in a club statement. “Nilsson is the kind of defender any team would want, as he is a natural leader and possesses all the attributes to be successful in any league. He is assertive in 1v1 duels, good in the air, and great at building out from the back. We are confident that all his experience and physical attributes will make him one of the best defenders in Major League Soccer.”

Nilsson joined Bielefeld for €400,000 from IF Elfsborg in 2019 and was part of the team that managed promotion to the Bundesliga in 2020. The Swedish national team player managed 89 (four goals) appearances for Arminia across all competitions. Nilsson will initially join St. Louis City SC 2 and play in the new MLS Next Pro before the club kicks off its inaugural MLS season in 2023.
