Manchester United are set to launch a £55m bid for Chelsea forward Mason Mount, according to recent reports. The England international is a primary target for Erik ten Hag heading into the summer transfer window, and the United boss wants a deal wrapped up quickly. However, lengthy negotiations have cast doubt over Mount’s future at Stamford Bridge, and with the 24-year-old set to enter the final year of his contract, several Premier League clubs are looking to take advantage of his contract impasse.
While Manchester United are willing to pay in the region of £55m for Mount, it falls well below Chelsea‘s £85m valuation. However, United may be prepared to increase their initial valuation of Mount given Ten Hag’s determination to add the attacker to his ranks next season. The intention from United to sign Mount this summer is clear, with the Blues academy graduate’s future set to become one of the sagas of the close season.
Aside from United, Arsenal are also interested in Mount as Mikel Arteta looks to build on his team’s second-placed finish this season. Liverpool are also actively pursuing a deal for Mount as Jurgen Klopp seeks to rebuild his midfield after a difficult season. Mount would become a key player for incoming Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, who has admired the attacking midfielder from a distance for a number of years.
Chelsea‘s American owners have spent £600m on new players in the previous two transfer windows but have not prioritised a new deal for Mount. Indeed, with the prospect of losing Mount for nothing next year now looming large, Chelsea will likely look to sell the player this summer rather than risk him leaving on a free transfer.
The potential departure of Mount would be a massive blow for Chelsea, who have endured a difficult season and are destined for a bottom-half finish. The attacking midfielder has been a standout performer for the Blues this season, contributing 9 goals and 8 assists, despite missing the final weeks of the season through injury.
The race to sign Mount is heating up, with Manchester United now in pole position to secure his signature. However, with several top clubs also vying for his services, it remains to be seen where the youngster will be playing his football next season.
