Rangers extend Scottish Premiership lead with victory over Kilmarnock

Rangers extended their lead at the Scottish Premiership summit to 21 points with a 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.

A stunning first half volley from Ryan Jack proved decisive as Steven Gerrard’s side edge closer to their first league title in a decade.

The result saw Rangers bounce back from their disappointing draw against basement boys Hamilton Academical last time out and maintain their unbeaten league record thus far this term.

The Gers endured a frustrating first half an hour as they struggled to break down a compact Kilmarnock outfit, first threatening 20 minutes in as James Tavernier netted following Cedric Itten’s flick on – however, the goal was chalked off for offside.

But when Rangers did finally make the breakthrough, it was well worth the wait.

Eight minutes before the break, Jack collected a loose ball 18 yards from goal, controlled with his instep and sent a thunderous volley flying past Colin Doyle in the Kilmarnock goal.

It was Rangers’ first shot on target of the afternoon – but the goal sparked them to life, Ryan Kent forcing Doyle into a finger-tipped save with an effort from the edge of the area on the stroke of half time.

Rangers saw the lions share of possession and pushed for a second in the second half, Kent and Itten both bringing good saves from Doyle.

However, a second goal of the game could not be found by either side as Rangers saw out the victory to move 21 points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership – although their rivals do have two games in hand. The Bhoys travel to St Johnstone on Sunday.

Rangers are back in action on Thursday with the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie against Antwerp, followed by the visit of Dundee United on Sunday. Gerrard’s side need just six more league wins to guarantee their first league title since 2011.
