Postecoglou poised to land Tottenham job

There has never been an Australian head coach in the Premier League but that is set to change, with Tottenham reportedly close to appointing Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou has been heavily linked to the Tottenham job after leading Celtic to the domestic treble – an achievement sealed in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday (Sunday AEST) – and The Athletic‘s David Ornstein reports a deal for the A-Leagues legend is “now expected to be finalised in the coming days”.

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot was the leading candidate to replace Antonio Conte, who departed in March as Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason served on an interim basis, but the Dutchman opted to stay in the Eredivisie.

Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, ex-Spain head coach Luis Enrique and Graham Potter have also been linked.

However, Postecoglou is now set to lead a revolution for a Spurs side that finished eighth in 2022-23 and have fellow Aussie Scott Munn as chief football officer as Daniel Levy’s Tottenham eye a cultural change and a coach to re-energise their style of play.

Former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory boss Postecoglou, who won an historic 2015 AFC Asian Cup with the Socceroos before blazing a trail in Japan via Yokohama F.Marinos, galvanised Celtic.

Arriving as an unknown in the UK, the 57-year-old dethroned bitter rivals Rangers in his first season as Celtic claimed the double.

This term, Postecoglou’s side have swept domestic honours – a record eighth treble.

And he was coy when asked about his future after wrapping up another title.

“I anticipate enjoying this moment for the next 24-48 hours, as long as I can, before someone drags me away and takes my attention away from enjoying something that’s been hard-earned,” he said.

“The reality is, there’s probably players in that dressing room who won’t be here next year. That’s the nature of football.

“But I want them to enjoy it, I am going to enjoy it, and that’s all I am going to focus on until someone grabs me by the collar and tells me that I have to answer certain questions.”
