Portsmouth are among a number of clubs from across the Championship and League One to be linked with transfer interest in Exeter City playmaker Matt Jay.
A report from Football League World suggests that the 25-year-old, who has scored four goals and added one assist in his nine League Two appearances so far this season, has attracted a long list of potential suitors from the Championship and League One ahead of the January transfer window.
Pompey, Ipswich Town, Barnsley and Millwall are among the clubs showing more of an interest of the ones that have supposedly expressed an interest in the Exeter star.
Jay is part of an impressive production line at St James Park in Devon, with Ethan Ampadu and Ollie Watkins among the more high-profile players to have come out the Grecians’ academy in recent years.
Having had loan spells with Weston Super-Mare, Hayes & Yeading and Truro City earlier in his career, since making his senior debut at Exeter in September 2013, Jay has scored 39 goals in 141 first-team appearances.
In March of this year, Jay won League Two’s Player of the Month award and in the 2020/21 season, Jay scored 18 league goals and provided seven assists from his 44 league appearances.
The prolific midfielder signed a contract extension with the Devon club earlier this year.
Pompey have struggled with finding someone to nail the number ten role in the opening months of this season, although Marcus Harness did well as a makeshift option there in the 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle earlier this month.
Having signed 14 players in the summer, the January transfer window may require allowing players to leave before further additions can be bought into the club.
