Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to make their second major signing of the January transfer window in the coming days, with the club reportedly edging closer to signing Sporting defender Pedro Porro. According to the Guardian, the Premier League side have been in negotiations with their Portuguese counterparts for much of January and may finally be reaching a solution for the 23-year-old talent.
According to the report, Porro has a release clause worth €45 million and Sporting are determined to receive a similar amount for any potential transfer. However, Spurs are now hoping to lower the demanded fee by offering to reduce a sell-on clause that is currently attached to former Spurs talent and current Sporting star Marcus Edwads. The figure reportedly stands at 40% of any fee the Portuguese club receives for the English forward. But Spurs may now be willing to reduce that clause for more favourable terms in the Porro negotiations.

Should Porro make the move to London, he will be the club’s second signing of the January window, following the arrival of Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma on a loan deal on Wednesday afternoon. Whose return to England just 18 months after departing Bournemouth in a €23.5m move to La Liga reportedly includes a clause that will allow Spurs to sign the forward on a permanent deal in the summer.
Reinforcements in attack and defence – but will they work?
Should Spurs complete the signing of Porro, the Spaniard will undoubtedly be expected to offer an immediate upgrade on what Antonio Conte currently has to work with in the right-back position. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have struggled to inspire much belief so far and, curiously, summer signing Djed Spence has been seldom used by Conte and is expected to depart on loan before the end of the month.
Danjuma should also hopefully provide some much-needed impetus in a failing area of the pitch. Although Harry Kane hasn’t struggled for goals this season – with 18 in just 29 games – his usual strike partner, Heung-Min Son, has been out of form for quite some time and managed just six goals this season. Which is only one more than defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg. As such, Conte & Co. will be hoping that Danjuma can make up for Son’s poor form and the injured Richarlison with a quick injection of goals.
