Celino with “back to the wall”

Now it is official. Italian U21 national team player Sandro Tonali will stay at Champions League qualifier AC Milan. The Rossoneri announced on Thursday that the 21-year-old defensive midfielder has been signed on a permanent deal from second division side Brescia Calcio. He has signed a contract until 2026.

Milan signed Tonali on loan for €10 million then relegated Brescia one year ago. The deal also included a €20 million buy-on clause. Tonali had a difficult season, however, and played just 2023 minutes across 37 games (no goals) and Milan opted not to trigger the clause—instead, the club negotiated a new deal. Milan now pay just €6.9 million, plus €3 million in performance-based add-ons.

“Brescia boss Massimo Cellino was with the back to the wall,” Italy Area Manager Jatin Dietl said. “Tonali’s contract would have expired in 2022; he is a massive AC fan and wanted to stay at the club. If Cellino didn’t accept the deal he would have had to pay back €5 million of last year’s loan fee”
