Manchester United 3-0 Arsenal U23s highlights and reaction

11 Min Read

Manchester United will be looking to build upon their recent impressive run of form when they host Arsenal in Premier League 2 Division One on Friday night.

Neil Wood’s young side head into the clash positioned sixth in the top division of Under-23s football after an incredible few weeks which has seen them thrash Liverpool 6-3 and Blackburn 6-4. Arsenal are eighth having drawn both of their last two matches.

Another victory for United this weekend could see them rise to as high as fourth in the table with Wood’s side currently four points behind league leaders Manchester City.

In terms of team news, Shola Shoretire is expected to start having signed his first professional deal with the club earlier in the week, while eyes will be on Hannibal Mejbri and Amad, should they be involved as well.

Shola Shoretire is repaying Manchester United’s summer gamble

There was always going to be a huge element of risk when Manchester United drew up their transfer plans for their youth players last summer.

After winning promotion back to the Premier League 2 Division One most would have expected Neil Wood’s side to retain their best youth talent and look to seize their return to the top level of youth football. They didn’t.

Instead the United chiefs took the selfless approach, allowing the older members of their squad to pursue vital loan moves elsewhere, leaving manager Wood with an exceptionally young squad, even by U23s level.

It was a huge risk. Even given mitigation it would be global news if United were relegated again, but it is credit to an incredible pool of players that they are now dreaming of winning the league instead.
