On the final day of the Premier League season, Everton secured their place in the top division by beating Bournemouth 1-0 with Abdoulaye Doucouré’s second-half goal. However, Leicester City, winners of the Premier League just seven years ago, were relegated despite beating West Ham 2-1. Leeds United, under the management of Sam Allardyce, were beaten 4-1 by Tottenham and ended the season second-from-bottom, five points from safety. The Irish goalkeeper, Mark Travers, stood in for Bournemouth and repelled Everton’s advances in the first half, but was unable to stop Doucouré’s goal in the second. Wout Faes doubled Leicester‘s lead over West Ham just after the hour mark, but by then, news of Doucoure’s goal had already filtered through to the fans. However, any hopes that Leicester had were devastated by Pablo Fornals’ 79th minute goal, which meant that Leicester fans could not wholly dedicate their focus on proceedings at Goodison Park. Everton grew anxious with so much to lose, dropping deep and losing the aggression of their earlier play, but the Toffees held on for a crucial victory. At home, Leeds went down without a final-day fight, falling behind after only two minutes to Spurs and then conceding two minutes into the second half to Pedro Porro. Jack Harrison gave the home fans some hope with a goal on 67 minutes, but two minutes later, Harry Kane converted his 30th goal of the season, ensuring Spurs victory. Lucas Moura, playing his final game for Spurs, signed off in fine style with a fourth goal. Leeds, who have been in the top flight for three seasons, drop down, while Leicester‘s fairytale has been given a shocking, sour ending.
