Two teams that had various results in group play faceoff on the final day of the Round of 16 at the UEFA European Championships, as England gets set to take on Germany.
England, surprisingly, came out on top of Group D with a 2-0-1 record. Their lone “blemish” was a scoreless draw in a rain-soaked affair against Scotland. Their other two matches showed some promise, as they defeated Croatia, the runner-ups at the latest World Cup, 1-0 in the tournament opener, and the Czech Republic in the group stage finale. Both of those squads each made it to the knockout stage.

Germany comes out of an extremely tough Group F, that saw them finish tied with Portugal with four points, each having a 1-1-1 record. Yet, Germany took the second spot, and looks to build of their back-to-back semifinal appearances at the Euro. After falling to France in their opening match, the Germans took care of Portugal in a wild 4-2 contest. Then, they were able to tie Hungary on the final matchday, securing a spot in the knockout stage.
To say England has the advantage coming in has some truth to it. Not just because they finished atop their group (albeit not as strong as the Group of Death), but also because England is on their home field, Wembley Stadium. That in itself is a change for Germany, as they played all three of their group matches at home in Munich. Also, England was one of two teams to hold their opponents scoreless through group play, the other being the Italians.
