Bruno Guimaraes hails Nick Pope as the ‘best goalkeeper in the World‘ after his 10th successive clean sheet helps Newcastle take a big step towards the Carabao Cup final

Bruno Guimaraes hailed Nick Pope as the World‘s best goalkeeper after he kept a 10th successive clean sheet.

England goalkeeper Pope continued his remarkable form with two brilliant saves to deny Che Adams before Joelinton struck at St Mary’s to give Newcastle the first-leg advantage against Southampton.

Midfielder Guimaraes said: ‘One goal is important, we could score more but most important was to be one-goal in front of Southampton. I want to thank Nick Pope I think he’s the best goalkeeper in the World.’

Both managers also heaped praised on Pope. Newcastle’s Eddie Howe said: ‘Nick I can’t speak highly enough of him. Brilliant shot stopper.’

Southampton manager Nathan Jones said: ‘In terms of goalkeeping, catching it, keeping the ball out of the net, making big saves he is categorically the best in the Premier League.’

Joelinton netted after missing an easy chance early in the second half and Howe said: ‘He is mentally very strong.

‘His own journey at Newcastle would epitomise that. He has real resilience, doesn’t get flustered in success or positive moment and when we needed him he was on the spot.’

With home advantage and a one-goal lead Newcastle will be big favourites to go through against Southampton who had a goal ruled out for handball following a VAR check.

But Howe warned: ‘The game is evenly balanced, its half time and we’re 1-0 up.

‘Unfortunately in my playing career I felt so many disappointments from potential moments of success and I don’t want my players to experience that or the club to experience. I will do everything in my power to make sure we’re ready for next week.’
