England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that he must achieve a “possibility in anybody’s eyes” level of success at the next European Championship to have a chance of retaining his post beyond the tournament. Southgate, 52, was named as England’s manager in 2016 and has overseen the team’s best international run since their victory in the World Cup. The team reached the Euro 2020 final, narrowly losing to Italy on penalties, and were narrowly defeated by France in the last World Cup. Despite internal reflections on his future after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Southgate opted to remain on as England’s manager until 2024. England are currently ranked third favourites to win the European Championship in Germany next year.
