Speaking on his Youtube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been waxing-lyrical about Gabriel Martinelli after his remarkable start to the Premier League season.

The Brazilian winger has been excellent in Arsenal’s opening two matches, grabbing two goals in two games.

Ferdinand has been very impressed by what he’s seen from the Brazilian star, even going as far as to compare the winger to Luis Suarez.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand had nothing but good things to say about Martinelli.

“Martinelli, if he stays fit, this guy, I’ve told you this before what Arteta told me, he could be the next Suarez-type player. Even Brendan Rodgers, I was interested in Brenden Rodgers’ comments, he said that Arsenal have gone up a level with their additions, so it looks positive with you guys,” Ferdinand said.

Got the ability

Ferdinand may be going a bit over the top when comparing Suarez and Martinelli, but let’s not forget just how young the Brazilian is.

Martinelli has only just turned 21, at the same age Suarez hadn’t even played a game in a top-five European league, so there’s reason to believe he could follow a trajectory that will get him to this level.

The winger is a fantastic footballer, he has all of the hunger, drive and talent in the world, and as Ferdinand says, the only thing keeping him from reaching the very top is his fitness.

Martinelli could genuinely be one of the Premier League’s very best by the time he hits his peak, and the fact that Arsenal signed him for just £6m is incredible in hindsight.

Make no mistake about it, the Gunners have a real gem on their hands here.
