For the first time in 55 years England are in the final of a major tournament, their path to Wembley Stadium built on an outstanding defense that is still yet to concede from open play. Their semifinal win over Denmark was the nerviest game yet, but the nation was sent into delirium when Gareth Southgate’s side overcame Mikkel Damsgaard’s early free kick to book their place in a second final on home soil.
In contrast to their hosts, Italy began the tournament slicing through opponents with rapier speed and dominant possession play. However as the competition has worn on the Azzurri have adapted to a more conservative approach, though it has served them well in the elimination of Belgium and Spain.
