Considering Southampton and Leeds United for their Double Gameweek 25

6 Min Read

The Headline Pick: Danny Ings – Chelsea (H) & Leeds United (A)

Momentum is quickly gathering for Danny Ings in fantasy circles, with his early season form, a recent goal and a double gameweek creating the perfect storm. It’s not been the smoothest season for Ings, with a couple of spells on the treatment bench: he has eight goals so far in this campaign, which is a far cry from the 22 he managed last season.

However, Ings has the capability to explode and grabbed a goal in the reverse fixture against Chelsea. His emphatic conversion against Wolves last weekend could demonstrate his return to form, despite failing to score in the four consecutive games previous to that.

Southampton as a whole aren’t in the best run, having failed to pick up a single point since New Year’s Day. Those considering Ings will be encouraged by his eight shots in his last four games though and he’s been on the wrong side of some very tight offside calls in this spell too. He’s also on spot-kicks for the Saints.

Southampton are available to back at 4/9 to score against Chelsea this weekend..

The Budget Pick: Patrick Bamford – Wolves (A) & Southampton (H)

While Ings presents a very convincing case for a transfer in and captaincy, I think it’s Leeds United who many fantasy managers will turn to for the armband in the double. Patrick Bamford is at the front of the queue, having netted 12 goals and eight assists this season. He’s also on penalties.

Leeds United arguably have the kinder fixtures for the double, with Wolves and Southampton both struggling for form respectively. Southampton have been leaking goals and will be low on confidence against this Leeds side who are known for their all out attack.

Bamford has the form too, taking 12 shots in his last four games and creating seven chances. That’s converted him two goals and three assists in this most recent spell. It’s rare for him to go two consecutive games without netting an attacking return.

The VAR Pick: Bruno Fernandes – Newcastle United (H)

Once again, Bruno Fernandes provides a credible premium alternative to the Double Gameweek players when it comes to the armband this weekend and he’s been in sensational form this season. He sits head and shoulders above all other fantasy assets for points returns.

He’s now on 14 goals and 11 assists for the campaign, having bagged three goals and two assists in his last four games. The reverse fixture ended 4-1 in Manchester United’s favour, with Fernandes grabbing a goal and an assist, despite missing a spot-kick.

Manchester United have received seven penalties this season, second only to Leicester City. Newcastle United have conceded just three. The Magpies have just one clean sheet in their last four games, conceding six goals over that period. They are managing a number of key defensive injuries.

You can back VAR and bet on Manchester United to score a penalty against Newcastle United at odds of 12/5.

The Sleeper Pick: Raphinha – Wolves (A) & Southampton (H)

One man who’s quietly been chalking up the returns in recent weeks is Leeds United winger Raphinha. He still sits in under 5% of sides, but expect his ownership to rise significantly this week. He’s delivered attacking returns in five consecutive games now, notching two goals and four assists.

We’ve seen a shift in set pieces for Leeds United in recent weeks, with Raphinha now dominating corners and indirect free kicks in the absence of Kalvin Phillips. We have seen Leeds struggle without Phillips in midfield, so his return in Gameweek 25 will be a welcome sight for owners of other Leeds United players.

The Wildcard Pick: Mo Salah – Everton (H)

There’s no denying that Liverpool are in a miserable run of form, but Mo Salah has quietly transcended this current downwards spiral with four goals in his last four games. Momentum is turning against Liverpool premium players, but Salah remains a class act and is a very risky sell.

He now has 17 goals this season, just two off his scoring total from last campaign and five away from the 22 he scored in 2018/19. He looks favourite to win the Golden Boot and continues to take penalties for Liverpool.

The Merseyside derby is usually a fiery affair, but Everton are looking far from their best right now, having failed to score in two of their last four against Newcastle United and Fulham at the time of writing. Salah of course bagged a goal in the reverse fixture.

Back Liverpool to beat Everton at 40/85 in Gameweek 25.
