Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that manager Marco Rose will join Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Dortmund have been on the lookout for a new manager after dismissing Lucien Favre in December and had been heavily linked with Rose, who has gained many admirers for his work with Salzburg and Gladbach, who he has led to the Champions League last 16 this season.
It was reported over the weekend that Dortmund were close to appointing him, and those reports gained traction on Monday when Kicker claimed he had agreed to activate a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave in the summer.
Now, Gladbach have formally announced his departure in a statement on their website.
Sporting director Max Eberl said: “We have had many discussions with each other in the past few weeks about Marco’s future. Unfortunately, he has now decided that he would like to make use of a clause in his contract, which runs until June 2022, and switch to Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
“If the conditions stipulated in his contract are met on time, he will no longer be available to us after the end of the season.
“Until then we will mobilize all our strengths together with Marco to achieve our goals in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Champions League.”
Rose was appointed at Gladbach in the summer of 2019 after a formidable spell in Austria with Salzburg. Gaining admirers for their aggressive style of football, Rose’s Salzburg won back-to-back league titles before he arrived in Germany in the summer of 2019.
His reputation as one of the best young coaches in the game has only grown since. In his first season in the Gladbach hotseat, Rose helped them qualify for the Champions League for only the third time in their history, and they went on to advance to the knockout stage despite landing a group with Inter and Real Madrid.
They have fallen marginally below expectations in this season’s Bundesliga, sitting seventh as things stand, but Rose will get the chance to make right on that before he moves onto his next challenge in the summer.
