Starting July 10
US national coach Gregg Berhalter has announced the 23-man roster for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. With players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie getting a break and Gio Reyna not being released by Borussia Dortmund, Berhalter is relying primarily on players from the domestic Major League Soccer.
“When we were looking at both the Gold Cup and the Nations League, we were thinking about one big roster picture, not two separate rosters,” Berhalter said. “The idea was to prepare our entire player pool in a competitive CONCACAF format for World Cup qualifying.”
That idea is reflected in the roster. With Matthew Hoppe, Eryk Williamson, James Sands, Donovan Pines and Gianluca Busio, Berhalter has nominated five debutants.
“When you look at this roster, it’s basically another group of players that are going to get the opportunity to compete to win a trophy. By the end of this tournament, we’re going to have virtually the entire player pool prepared for World Cup qualifying,” Berhalter continued.

Despite the inexperience of the squad, winning the tournament is paramount for Berhalter: “Our priority is to win the Gold Cup. Anytime we’re competing for a trophy, we want to win it.”
The Gold Cup kicks off on July 10. One day later, the USMNT will face an opponent yet to be determined. Other than that, the U.S. will play Canada and Martinique in Group B.
