Now confirmed

Ayo Akinola will switch allegiances from the US men’s national team to the Canadian national team. Transfermarkt can confirm a report by Kristian Dyer (cited via Waking The Red) that Akinola will represent Canada at the Gold Cup.

The 21-year-old striker has been present at both the US men’s national team and Canadian national team training camps in recent months. Akinola then trained with Canada during their run to the final stage of World Cup qualifying. In Akinola, Canada secure another exciting striker. The Toronto FC star becomes the third most valuable center-forward in the CanMNT program.

Update: Canada Soccer have now confirmed the news. “I’m really excited to represent Canada at the international level,” said Ayo Akinola in a statement issued by the Canadian football federation. “It’s a very exciting time for the country with all the quality that’s on the roster. Canada has been my home for almost all my life and I’m excited to give back. I’m ready to give my best for Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team in these crucial months coming up.”
