Julian Alvarez, Manchester City’s forward, is reportedly facing an uncertain future at the club as Bayern Munich shows interest in him. Despite the fact that he only joined City in January 2022, the 23-year-old Argentine World Cup winner signed a new five-year contract extension with the club in March. Though he has played second fiddle to Erling Haaland for most of his debut season at the Etihad, Alvarez already has 17 goals to his name in all competitions, including nine in the Premier League.
Reliable transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that German giants Bayern Munich are interested in signing Alvarez and have made an inquiry about him. Even though Manchester City may not be willing to part with Alvarez, Bayern is expected to spend big on a new striker during the summer transfer window. Other strikers on their list include Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who is the Blues’ top priority.
Osimhen’s asking price currently seems too high for Bayern to make a move for him. The Nigerian forward is at the top of Chelsea’s list, but Napoli has set an “at least €150m” price tag, which would be problematic for the Blues, particularly since they cannot offer him Champions League football. Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt is Bayern’s top target, since a move for Kane seems unlikely.
Though a summer move for Alvarez does not seem realistic at the moment, given that he is happy with his role at City and has only recently signed a new contract, Plettenberg’s report cannot be taken lightly. The Bundesliga giants want to add more firepower upfront and have prioritized Alvarez as one of their targets. However, Manchester City may be reluctant to let go of the talented forward, who could be vital for their future success.
It remains to be seen whether or not Bayern will be able to lure Alvarez away from City. Still, with his impressive performances, it’s no surprise that he has gained interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe. City may have to fight tooth and nail to keep hold of him, and Alvarez will also need to decide if he wants to continue playing a second-string role or press for a move that offers him more first-team opportunities.
