56-goal star ‘would love to join’ Conte at Hotspur Way

Tottenham target Jesse Lingard would “love to join” the north London club although only if he played a big part under Antonio Conte, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 29-year-old is a free agent after his contract at Manchester United expired last month and he’s been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

What’s the latest news involving Lingard?

According to the Telegraph, Spurs are considering a move for the England international to bolster their attacking options and boost their homegrown numbers, with the club currently over their non-homegrown limit following the arrivals of Ivan Perisic, Ives Bissouma and Richarlison.

Steven Bergwijn is finally expected to sign for Ajax following months of talks, although Tottenham still have four genuine wide players and would therefore want Lingard to play centrally to give Conte another option in his squad.

But Lingard, who’s scored 56 senior goals across his club career, would be far from a guaranteed starter at Hotspur Way and while Jones reckons that a move to the capital would appeal to him, only if he plays a reasonable amount having spent the majority of last season on the bench.

What did Jones say about Lingard?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s always a nice luxury to have to bring in a player with that creativity that can add depth to the squad.

“I’ll be honest, with Lingard, he would love a club of that level, but only if he can sense a big role within that team and I’m not sure I see Jesse Lingard playing a big part in Tottenham’s team next season given what we’ve already seen from them last season and what we’ve seen this summer.”

Is anyone else being linked with Lingard?

Given that he’s proven in the Premier League and an established international, Lingard is not short of admirers, especially because he’s relatively risk-free on a free transfer.

According to the Mirror, Tottenham face stiff competition for the attacker’s signature, with Everton and Newcastle both keen on his services, while West Ham, who’ve always looked the favourites to sign him, remain keen.

Spurs are the only team able to offer him Champions League football, but if Lingard’s top priority is regular game-time then he might want to look elsewhere, with the likes of Lucas Moura, Heung Min Son, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski likely to make regular minutes hard to come by.
