Romelu Lukaku exit can influence Hakim Ziyech and Kepa Arrizabalaga as Chelsea take new approach

A number of Chelsea players have been linked with a move worth less than what the club initially bought them for. It is foreign for the Blues to let go of their assets without either some form of profit gained. They are notorious for harbouring their players for far too long until the correct offer comes in or if the contract has been run down.

There is an urgent need for change if Chelsea are to balance the books for the upcoming transfer windows to come. The Roman Abramovich era has ended after 19 successful years, and we cannot expect new owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, to spend as lavishly as the Russian billionaire.

With Bruce Buck stepping down and Marina Granovskaia leaving the club, Boehly has begun the ‘out with the old, in with the new’ process. Whilst the process has started from the top, it is also trickling down to player transfers, including Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Romelu Lukaku is on his way out, following an agreement between Chelsea and Inter Milan. The agreement is in the region of £6.9m with add-ons. Lukaku has also agreed to a 30-per-cent pay cut to smooth his exit, with his earnings set to drop from £10m per year after tax to £7m, which will all be paid by Inter Milan.

Originally the Blues were not keen on budging on a fee less than £25 million with an obligation to buy. If this course of events transpired a year before Boehly was in charge, would the transfer have even been made? It is easy to see where Chelsea have gone wrong in their transfer window in recent years. The reluctance to sell players that have fallen out of favour with club and manager has kept unnecessary figures on Chelsea’s wage bill. The pace of the Lukaku transfer and the acceptance to take less than half of their asking price shows that the Blues are heading in a different direction.

We can only truly be sure that Boehly is on course to changing the culture at Chelsea if more transfers are made. At the moment, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Hakim Ziyech are the next two players that could be out the door this summer too.

Reports suggest that Ziyech could be leaving West London for a chance to play in Italy. AC Milan have registered their interest in the Moroccan wizard, and talks are said to be ongoing. Milan’s offer is a £4.3m loan with a £17m option to buy.

Kepa has also racked up some interest from Newcastle, but more recently, French side Nice are open to the idea. According to footmercato, Nice’s ‘clear objective’ is to try and sign Arrizabalaga on loan this summer. The Spaniard wants to work on his career to revive his chances of playing for his country, Spain, in future.

A couple of loan deals may not indicate the full extent of how Chelsea will be doing their business going forward; however, it is impressive to see a no-nonsense approach being taken. It’s out with the old and in with the new by all means necessary.
