Tottenham interested in signing Martin Terrier

Tottenham are keen on Ligue 1 Player of the Year nominee Martin Terrier after an exceptional season with Rennes.

According to Foot Mercato, Tottenham are interested in signing Martin Terrier after the Frenchman enjoyed a stunning 2021/22 season with Rennes. Spurs are looking for a prolific goalscorer next season, and the left-sided attacker may be considered for fulfilling the role.

Tottenham’s plans for the summer may be boosted with the club now favourites to finish in the top four ahead of arch-rivals Arsenal. Qualification for the next season’s Champions League might even cement manager Antonio Conte’s position after recent reports insisted the Italian might depart north London.

Conte is already planning transfer business with director Fabio Paratici as they look to trim the squad by offloading unwanted players. Among them is Steven Bergwijn, as the club look at replacing the Dutchman with a quality option. The manager’s aim is to ease the goalscoring burden on Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

That reason justifies their pursuit of Raheem Sterling, who could be leaving Manchester City in the summer. Signing the England international will be a costly affair, and there are no guarantees he would be willing to sign for Spurs, considering he has interest from Barcelona. So, it would bode well for Tottenham to keep their options open.

They are also keen on Lautaro Martinez, who could cost €60 million. While the Argentine is a familiar face to Conte, having worked together back at Inter Milan, Tottenham already have a striker in Harry Kane, and their system does not dictate playing two centre-forwards.

Hence, Spurs are now looking at Martin Terrier, who has had an exceptional season for Rennes. His 21 goals in Ligue 1 have helped the team into the top-four as they are one win away from playing Champions League football next season.

Terrier’s goal would be to remain in the European competition, and he could do that at Spurs. The 25-year-old’s performances in Ligue 1 have earned him a Player of the Year nomination, and if he wins, it will be deserved. His displays have also caught the eye of France national coach Didier Deschamps, who could be forced to call him up.

Now, Tottenham have also set their sights on the versatile forward, who can play anywhere across the frontline. Spurs may look to launch an approach for the 25-year-old, although they might be surprised at Rennes’ asking price. Terrier has a contract until 2024 and could cost a lot of money.

It certainly will be a difficult challenge for Tottenham to convince the French club to sell their prized asset when they know that the player is happy where he is and still has two years left on his contract.
