Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka sends clear message to arch-rivals Tottenham ahead of Norwich City clash

Granit Xhaka says Arsenal have to keep up hope that they will clinch a Champions League spot with help from Norwich City.

The Gunners’ ambitions of finishing in the top four took a major dent on Monday night after a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United. It is a result that leaves them in fifth in the Premier League and two points behind arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur in fourth heading into the final day of the season.

Arsenal’s task on Sunday is clear – beat Everton at all costs. However, they also need Tottenham to lose at already-relegated Norwich. A draw for Spurs would not be enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to snatch the last Champions League spot with Tottenham also having a 15 goal advantage.

The Canaries became the first club to be relegated from the Premier League this season after their fate was confirmed following a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at the end of April. With just five wins to their name, many have written off City’s chances of pulling off a shock win against Spurs on the final day, but Xhaka says Arsenal cannot give up hope.

After the loss to Newcastle, the Swiss international told BBC Sport: “If Tottenham lose and we win, you never know in football. We have to hope.

“Before the game (against Newcastle) everything was in our hands. It’s a totally different game now. If you have to hope in football and in life it’s different.”
